Expressionist Experimentation

Smarkusz was innovative with material combinations and application methods in his abstract art.

Vincent admired the work of the Boston Expressionist Kahlil George Gibran - Magic-realism painter, and abstract sculptor.
Considered a "Master of Materials", Gibran was three years younger than Vincent, attended The Museum School during WWII, and then had a shop on Joy Street in Boston, two blocks south of Smarkusz's own studio loft.  Gebran also worked with Boris Mirski, whose Charles Street Gallery (4 blocks west of Joy St.) attracted prominent Boston artists and collectors.

Vincent is also noted for:

- Preparation of fine woven Linen on Masonite panels, to accomodate his use of color washes and fine line brushwork

- The use of many types of paints and the application techniques he used over the years

- Custom fabricated Picture Frames - each designed and built by the artist himself, with its specific painting in mind
